Writing a dissertation can be a daunting task for many and a dissertation guide can be helpful. This requires preparing a research proposal, conducting a research and writing down the process and findings of the research. This article therefore discusses a dissertation guide providing the basic guidelines for writing a dissertation.
A student needs to start his dissertation with a research proposal providing the background to the research. It should also include a short literature review, research questions that the student will attempt to answer through his research and the research methodology that will be used to achieve the same.
The introduction section starts with a background to the research problem. It also provides the problem statement, research questions as well as aims and objectives of the research. Some institutions also prefer if the structure of the dissertation is provided in the introduction.
Literature review involves researching published books and articles on the research subject and conducting a critical evaluation of these academic sources. It involves summarizing, synthesizing and analyzing the argument of other writers as opposed to supporting the argument of the student who is writing the dissertation.
The research methodology that will be used to conduct the research is discussed in detail in this section. This includes justifying the choice of the methodology selected, selection of sample population or case, design of the questionnaire or interview, data collection as well as data analysis methods.
The findings obtained from conducting the research are provided, analyzed and discussed in detail in this section. This section is assisted with graphs, charts and data tables.
In this section, a summary of the entire dissertation is provided. Recommendations are provided by the student based on the findings, analysis and discussion. Finally, a conclusion is provided along with further research possibilities.
Depending on the institution requirements, the appropriate reference style such as APA, MLA, etc. is used to format the document, provide in-text citations and references.
