Literature Essay Format – How to Write A Well-Structured Essay

literature essay article

Proper formatting is one of the key features of a good literature essay. Students who have trouble writing their essays are advised to write an outline to coordinate their essay content.

Formatting essays on literature will give you better control on your writing style and content. If you observe this simple and basic format when writing an essay on literature, you will not stray from creating a solid structure for your academic paper while observing the best quality of content to write.

Writing your thesis statement

This part of your literature essay is written on the introduction. You are expected to write a single statement that would indicate the primary idea of literature essays. The thesis statement in the introduction must be an accurate revelation of your own perspectives regarding the literature theme that you will write an essay about.

It is recommended to write a thesis statement that would be debatable such as “I agree with the author’s point of view that Joe is experiencing an internal conflict because of his insecurities,” instead of stating “Joe feels insecure about many things.”

You can anchor your arguments and samples in the literature essay from this sample statement alone, thereby giving you more room to show evidence why Joe is insecure, what are the kinds of internal conflicts he manifests and the implications of this conflicting feeling.

Writing your interpretation

This part is written on the body of literature essays. It is recommended to use a paragraph quote model to outline your points and interpretations. Your selected quote should be one related to your thesis statement. Structure your interpretation with one quote per paragraph format.

You need to answer what does a quote means, taking note of the symbolism that is commonly used in literary writing such as “Joe feels his world is on a wavy sea.” What does this mean and how it this related to Joe’s feeling of insecurities? Discuss one interpretation per paragraph in order to give a clear statement and discussion on each of your perspective about the literature.

Writing your conclusion

The conclusion is the summary of literature essays’ body. Reiterate here the significance of your essay and paraphrase your thesis statement. Hence, you can leave a statement to conclude your essay such as “Joe’s insecurities caused by his internal conflicts led him to a more tumultuous relationship with his self and his environment.”
