What Is an Annotated Bibliography?

Posted On August 4th, 2007 | Annotated Bibliography Writing

Annotated bibliography is a type of document consisting of citations of books, articles or other sources. Each source cited is followed by a brief description of its content (usually150-200 words).

An annotated Bibliography aims to inform the reader about accuracy, quality and relevance of the sources cited.

To correctly write an Annotated Bibliography, one should possess quite some writing skills. They are: informed library research first of all, succinct analysis and concise exposition.

When writing an Annotated Bibliography, you should find and record the citations for your sources, which may contain ideas related to your topic. Then review the items and chose those that have the most perspective as for your topic. Cite the source using a proper format. Write a brief summary that includes the central idea and the scope of the source chosen. Include brief information about the author, about his authority or background; comment on what the audience is intended to; compare this work with the others cited before and explain how this work enlightens the topic of your bibliography.

Structure of an Annotated Bibliography

Posted On July 6th, 2007 | Annotated Bibliography Writing

Annotated bibliography is a very important part of your work and of the whole your paper, because it shows the depth of the research conducted and the level of professionalism in your work. It displays the level of trust that could be asserted to your work relying on your sources.

The general structure of an annotated bibliography is pretty much simple. The main difference that can be added is the citation style used for the bibliography.

There are two most frequently used citation styles used to formalize your paper: MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American Psychological Association) citation styles. When writing a text using these two citation styles, the difference can be easily seen, but when arranging an annotated bibliography, the difference is so slight that it is easy to make a mistake.

So, the structure on an AB looks like this: First you list the last name of the author(s) of the book. Then you write the name of the book or the article (if it is an article, after its heading the name of the magazine or the journal it was published in must be placed). And the last things to add are the numbers of pages you referred to. This is just the heading of the bibliography entry. After that, the next like has to be moved further from the edge of the page, so that the heading would kind of push forward. These are the similarities in all of the citation styles used for Abs (Annotated Bibliographies).

Annotated Bibliography: Citation

Posted On July 5th, 2007 | Annotated Bibliography Writing

Citation is a reference to a source of material cited when writing an essay a research paper or any kind of research papers that need a lot of information to be used, digested and provided in. The reference should not contain useless information as, for instance, author’s biography or the way this or that source, no matter if it is a book or a magazine, was created. The one and the only aim of the citation is to identify the source of the citation. Citations are found in the research papers, bibliographies.

Depending on the type of citation and the style required, citations may be put either in the body of the text, regular type of citation for the MLA citation style, or at the bottom of the page, generally referred to as footnotes, or in the end of any paper, in the end notes.

Depending on the source cited, the citations should contain information regarding the author of the source, title of the source, date of publication and the publisher, if needed. To make citations easy to work with, a number of organizations created their own citation styles. The most important citation styles are: the APA citation style, mostly used for social sciences; the Chicago citation style, mostly used for humanities; the Harvard citation style, famous for its short references; the MLA citation style, created for literary criticism; the IEEE citation style and a number of others. It is important to stick closely to the format of the citation style required as they differ and provide information that might not be needed or, vice versa, can lack the information needed.
