Decision Support System in the Decision-Making Process

Introduction

In this paper, the article “The Efficacy of a Decision Support System (DSS) in Enhancing Risk Assessment Performance” by Song et al. will be analyzed. The article discusses the important role the DSS is playing in the decision-making process. The main question in regards to the article is whether it is safe for organizations to depend on the DSS as a decision-making tool. A decision support system is a computerized software used in an agency or a corporation to facilitate determinations, decisions, and action plans. A DSS peruses through and analyzes a vast volume of data, processing the detailed information used in decision-making and problem-solving.

Main body

The main task of the DSS is to assist managers in decision-making by acquiring large amounts of information generated from various relevant data systems which are involved in organizational business processes (Samuel et al., 2017). The article also states the research method used on the DSS evaluation as being experimental in design, where a random picking of participants was done. Each was required to respond to a questionnaire that had different questions related to the DSS operations. From the results, the participants supported the system by claiming the DSS was an essential system (Wimmer et al., 2016).

First, it allows for more informed decision-making, faster problem-solving, and enhanced performance in dealing with issues or procedures, organizing, and strategic planning. The second advantage according to the results is cost control, which is accomplished by labor savings in terms of decision-making methods, lesser infrastructure, and technical costs. Third, it increases decision-makers’ satisfaction by significantly reducing frustrations that are typically faced during the decision-making process. Fourth, it improves the organization’s operational control by making business transaction data accessible for performance reporting and ad hoc querying (Song et al., 2016). According to the results, DSS drawbacks are minimal and insignificant.

Conclusion

In conclusion, DSS is perceived to be effective when it is able to provide a positive impact during the decision-making process, which makes it the most significant factor associated with its overall success. By promoting successful assessment and assimilation of various types of quantitative and qualitative knowledge for improved performance in the implementation, this system holds considerable promise for improving performance in an organization.
